So this summer my daughter came to visit and while she was here she expressed how much she hated science. Well, my geeky self was almost appalled at the thought! So we tried to convince her with reason after reason why science was cool. We tried to relate it to anything and everything that she may find interesting. But as it turned out, nothing convinced her until one day she was in the kitchen with her mom baking cupcakes. They were enjoying a good baking session as they had dozens before. But this time, her mom looked over and told her the biggest shocker: baking was science. Well, that floored my daughter. She quickly tried to refuse to believe us but when we told her all the ways in which baking is science, she couldn’t help but find herself giving in.
It was interesting stuff! We told her about how the cake goes through a physical change when you mix the ingredients, but a chemical change when you cook it. How there are some ingredients that make it react the way we want it too, like yeast and baking soda. We told her how each ingredient has a job to do and when they come together delicious creations are made. By the end of this baking session her mind was suddenly filled with all the reasons why science was cool after all. She never expected that there was science in baking. It’s not something that we tend to think much about when we go whipping up a batch of muffins. But it definitely makes a baker look like a scientist, especially when they get it just right and it tastes oh so perfect! They have both that magical and scientific skill when it comes to making your sweet treats something exceptional.
