Have you ever seen those really fancy cakes and found yourself wondering how they managed to get it so perfect and smooth? At home in our own kitchens, it’s hard enough to make something attractive sometimes, let alone that perfect. Well, there is a trick, and it’s not your technique but rather the material. Professional cake masters use something called fondant, which is more like a thick paste, or even like clay in the world of baking. It often comes in blocks of varying weights and is most often available in plain white. A lot of people prefer to get a larger quantity of white and then add in the colors that they want later. It saves a lot of money in the long run. You can also add special flavors into the plain sugary material, leaving the possibilities endless.
As for using fondant, you will want to get it from your local craft store or specialty bakery section. You will want to first make sure that you are working with a very clean work space. Then you will want to sprinkle the area with icing sugar or cornflour. There are often instructions on the packaging that can help you determine how much you will need to use for your project. Follow these and remove as much as your baking will need. Then knead it for a minute or so to soften it before you microwave it for around 10 seconds. You will then need to make sure your cake is ready before flipping the flat side to the top. You will then roll the fondant out to meet the shape of the cake or other pastry. It might take some practice to get the hang of working with fondant. It is definitely a very different baking medium that regular frosting. You can also mold fondant to create shapes, figures, lettering, or anything else you can imagine.
